Must-Visit Wineries in Traverse City: Part Two

Carol Wolniakowski

There are beautiful wine regions all over the world, but did you know that some of the best scenery is in Northern Michigan? Must-Visit Wineries in Traverse City: Part One

Carol Wolniakowski

I had the chance to spend a few days near Traverse City in the peak of fall colors.  WOW.  It truly is a stunning area.  Northwest Michigan is home to a thriving wine region, offering a variety of red, white, sparkling, sweet, and dry wines.  There are a fair amount of fruit wines (especially cherry, as the cherry capital of the country), but I focused on tasting the wines made from grapes.  The climate is cooler than many other U.S. wine regions - it actually sits on the 45th latitude, the same as prominent wine regions such as Bordeaux, Côte du Rhône and Piedmont.  The result are wines that are bright, fresh and lively.

Carol Wolniakowski

Michigan grows more fruit than any other state aside from California:  peaches, cherries, apples - even grapes for Welch’s grape juice.  Naturally, this means Michigan is well known for it’s u-pick farms, jams and sweet wines made from all sorts of fruit.  But what about wines from grapes like Riesling, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon? Does Michigan have the climate, the soil and the talent to produce high quality European wines?  And why would Conde Nast Traveler list Southwest Michigan as a must-visit in 2020?  I hit the road to find out.
