Top 12 Packing Tips From a Personal Stylist

Carol Wolniakowski

I think we can all agree that packing is one of the least pleasant aspects of travel.  What to pack and how to pack it takes practice to master.  And how on earth can you travel in style without overpacking?  I checked in with personal stylist Samantha Torkelson of Three Hangers to get the scoop on how to pack efficiently for your next trip.

  1. Create a packing list. A checklist is essential so you don’t forget important items like undergarments (or mascara!). There are many packing list templates online but it is important to customize your own list for items important to you. One item often overlooked is a small, travel umbrella. Nothing ruins a fabulous look more than getting stuck in a downpour!

  2. Pack by outfits. Choose a color/pattern scheme that you can mix and match to create several looks. Picking a color palette of three colors works best. One color should be your anchor color that will coordinate with your shoes. (More on shoes later...)  You essentially want to build a wardrobe capsule so you can minimize the number of items packed, yet create a coordinated, chic outfit.  Lay out your outfits on your floor or bed before packing to visualize how each piece goes together and to eliminate unnecessary items.

  3. Don’t forget accessories. Accessories are critical to making your wardrobe capsule work.  Use necklaces, scarves, earrings and hats to diversify your outfit options. You can re-wear certain clothes items yet create a completely different look using accessories. Include a clutch purse to take your look from day to evening.

  4. Pack scarves.  Scarves deserve their own bullet point, as they are so versatile for traveling!  You can use a scarf or pashmina on the plane as a blanket or pillow, in the daytime for style, and in the evening as a shawl.

  5. Keep shoes to a minimum. Pack a maximum of 3 pairs of shoes. (Ok, I may not always follow this one...). The type of shoes will obviously depend on your destination and activities. I typically aim for one flat like a ballet flat, one tall boot or bootie (or wedge sandal if warm), and one pair of sneakers, either my workout shoes if needed or fashion sneakers for touring. Remember to pack flip flops for the pool, beach or spa - I don’t count these towards my limit as they are skinny :). Do not wear the same pair of shoes multiple days in a row - the shoes need time to breathe and your feet need a break from the same pressure points.

  6. Strategize your beauty products.  Use the same wardrobe capsule philosophy for your makeup. Choosing a neutral color scheme will minimize the items needed. Find products that have multiple uses - a foundation stick can double as concealer and color sticks like the Nars Multiple can be used for cheeks, lips and eyes. Consider packing one product to make your look pop in photos, like a bright lip gloss. You know all those samples of skin care, moisturizers and perfume?  Save them in a box and use solely for travel - its amazing how much space you can save by eliminating bottles and full size products like mascara and lipstick.  Another tip - pack a small spray bottle of Febreeze or Dryel that can be used to freshen up clothing or a hotel room.

  7. Plan for the climate, with a caveat. Weather plays a big part in dressing for your destination, so be sure to check the forecast before packing. However, it is important to pack items that are versatile and can be layered so that you are prepared for the unexpected. I found the best water resistant jacket at Athleta that rolls with ease and can slide into the corner of your bag.

  8. Roll clothes instead of folding. You can cram more into your suitcase when you roll rather than fold.  Packing cubes are a great tool - you can coordinate outfits in one cube, or combine similar items together. I recently picked up packing cubes from Compass Rose, which are sized to fit in your international carry-on. Choosing fabrics that are wrinkle-resistant can be a game-changer and are worth an investment. Pack a fabric spray like the Downy Wrinkle Releaser for smoothing wrinkles.

  9. Utilize extra space. Stuff your shoes with socks and underwear to retain the shape of your shoes and to utilize all the extra room in your suitcase. Use the same philosophy to keep the shape of hats and bras. Place jewelry inside a purse or clutch.

  10. Dress strategically for plane travel. Dress in layers as the temperature on planes and trains can fluctuate and your destination weather may differ from home.  Wear your bulkiest items like a blazer or sweater (or tall boots) onboard to save room in the luggage. If wearing sandals, pack a pair of socks to keep your feet warm.

  11. Pack your carry-on with laser precision.  Your carry on needs to contain essentials for your flight or ride, factoring in layovers or delays - yet light enough to manage with ease through long terminals and up and down stairs. It certainly is not very chic to be lugging a huge, overstuffed bag around the airport.  Be sure to include medication and other items not easily replaced like jewelry or swimsuit.  Other items to consider include hand sanitizer, eye drops, phone charger, change of underwear, facial wipes, toothpaste, chewing gum and earplugs. And don’t forget some snacks!

  12. Unpack asap.  Upon arrival to your room, immediately unpack, spray clothes with wrinkle releaser if needed, and hang your items.  I always request an iron as well so that I am prepared the next morning.  Place clothes, accessories and shoes in the closet and drawers to avoid digging through your luggage.  Taking a few minutes now will end up saving time later. Get yourself organized from the start so that your outfits are planned and ready to go - leaving you refreshed and put together.

Remember the key to packing with style is planning for comfort and versatility.  Happy vacationing!
