Sicily

While there are 20 designated wine growing regions in Italy, nothing quite compares to Sicily.  With a fascinating history and diverse heritage, Sicily has an identity all its own.  An active volcano, ancient ruins, delicious food and a breathtaking seaside landscape - what more could you ask for in a wine getaway?

Sicily has been making wine for millennia.  It became known for Marsala wine, but today Sicily's star grape is Nero d'Avola.  This indigenous grape produces structured yet elegant red wines with aromas of strawberry, ripe cherry, red flowers, licorice and cocoa.  The refreshing Grillo is the region's most popular white wine.  Its fresh citrus and nutty flavors are perfect for grilled seafood enjoyed al fresco.

Sicily also grows over a dozen of other indigenous grapes to sample in addition to international varieties like Chardonnay and Syrah. The wine regions of Sicily are varied and diverse, making them a fascinating destination for wine lovers to visit.

In addition to touring old world cellars and steep vineyards, you can explore the unparalleled natural and historic gems throughout the island, many designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Take a cable car to the top of Mount Etna, one of the world's most active volcanoes. Hike through natural reserves or take in the sun on stunning cliffside beaches.  Visit the Stairs of the Turks, dramatic limestone steps shaped by the sea, or give rock climbing a try. The natural beauty of this island enchants.

Sicily is home to a host of ancient treasures throughout the island, a reflection of its Greek, Roman, Spanish, Phoenician and Arabic influences. Take a tour through the Valley of the Temples, the largest archaeological site in the world, where excavations continue to this day.  Stroll through the ancient city of Siracusa, with its spectacular Greek ruins and dazzling Baroque piazzas. Explore the ancient Greek amphitheater in the posh resort town of Taormina and taste your way through the bustling food markets of Palermo. There is history on every corner in Sicily.

Among its UNESCO World Heritage sites is the island of Pantelleria, which is recognized for its traditional head-trained grapevines of Zibibbo.  These growing techniques are celebrated in wine festivals held for months throughout the year.

Italy certainly does not lack for delicious cuisine, but the mosaic of flavors of Sicily are unlike any other. Surrounded by water, it is no surprise that seafood plays an important role in Sicilian life, with sardines being a favorite.  While walking through town, enjoy the street food chickpea fritters known as panelle and the stuffed, fried rice balls, arancini followed by an icy-sweet lemon granita. Other dishes not to miss are Parmigiana di melanzane, known to us as eggplant parmigiana, fresh eggplant salad caponata, and sfincione, Sicilian's version of pizza. For dessert try the sweet sponge cake cassata and, of course, cannoli!

Sicily offers a rich, unique experience for wine travelers.  The blend of cultural influences and timeless beauty along with the distinctive wines make Sicily a must-visit for anyone who loves food, wine and history.
