Burgundy

A visit to Burgundy is the ultimate experience for food and wine lovers.  The wines are legendary, representing some of the world's most highly prized - and expensive - bottles. A patchwork of idyllic vineyards  separate small, charming villages and represent hundreds of years of family pride and tradition.

The rolling hills of Burgundy are full of history, tradition and family tales.  In the Middle Ages, monasteries were in charge of winemaking for the church. The monks discovered that certain terrain was more suitable to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay than others, and began to mark separate plots of land accordingly.  These climats exist to this day, representing a hierarchy of quality and price.

A visit to Burgundy is an immersive education in terroir.  Since mostly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is grown in the region, you can experience the profound differences in aromas, tastes and styles based on location, and will gain a new appreciation for the art of growing grapes.

The Beaujolais wine region is located in the Southern part of Burgundy and is considered part of the region, even though the Gamay grape is mostly grown there.  Beaujolais offers quality wines at a value compared to Burgundy and is a lovely area to visit.

The domaines in this region are often smaller, family-owned operations, giving you the opportunity to meet with an estate owner.  Join a winemaker on a walk through the vineyards and taste different vintages in an ancient cellar.  Experience first-hand the differences between Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines.

Ride a bike through iconic vineyards and learn about the art of mustard production in Dijon.  Soak in history at a medieval fortress or the infamous Hospice du Beaune. Start your day with a cafe au lait and warm croissant, spend time strolling cobblestone streets and boutique shopping, and enjoy a traditional Bouf Bourgogne dinner in a local brasserie. There are so many ways to spend your time in Burgundy!

A river cruise is a luxurious way to see the Southern part of Burgundy.  Begin or end your river journey with visits to Beaune, Macon or Beaujolais as a gateway to the gastronomic capital of Lyon and the Rhone Valley.   Docking just steps from the village means you are immediately immersed in local culture - all while sailing on a chic, intimate floating hotel.  Visit a farmers market with a chef, tour a magnificent Benedictine Abbey or a experience the historic city of Beaune - all in a small, private group without lines or crowds.

Every wine enthusiast needs to visit Burgundy.  This region is the ultimate summation of all that makes wine so special: quality grapes, fascinating history, family tradition, charming villages and local cuisine - all against a backdrop of rolling green hillsides.  Perfection.
