Fabulous Fall Getaways

Carol Wolniakowski

Fall is the best time of year to travel.  The crisp air and vibrant hues beckon us to get out and explore.  From apple picking to horseback riding to sipping wine in the vineyard, there are endless ways to enjoy Mother Nature in her full glory.  Autumn also kicks off comfort food season, where we indulge in all the flavors of the new harvest.  Exploring the diverse landscape and local cuisine of our country is the ultimate way to experience the season.

Naturally, wine country is the premier choice for those who love food and wine.  If you are lucky enough to visit during the grape harvest, you will be captivated by the aromas of crushed grapes in the air and swept away with excitement for the new vintage.  The grapevines turn from bright green to golden yellow to fiery crimson - it's truly a magnificent site.

Napa and Sonoma set the standard for wine tourism, with countless tastings and outdoor activities.  The following regions are a bit more under the radar, but also have a lot to offer and would make for an enjoyable fall getaway:

Traverse City, MI - Northern Michigan has the most spectacular fall colors in the country (world?).  That alone is enough reason to visit.  The area also boasts lovely lake views, a large variety of wines as well as breweries and distilleries.

Paso Robles, CA  - This picturesque region stands between San Francisco and Los Angeles along California’s scenic Central Coast.  Anchored by the small city of Paso Robles, this area has over 200 wineries growing more than 60 grape varieties from an array of microclimates.

Finger Lakes, NY - Finger Lakes is about five hours from NYC and home to more than 100 wineries, breweries and distilleries centered around Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga Lakes.  This region is highly regarded for Riesling and Gewurztraminer plus cool-climate reds like Cabernet Franc and Pinot Noir.

Hill Country, TX -  Centrally located about an hour west of Austin and north of San Antonio, this vast, lovely region offers a large variety of wine styles to suit all tastes. Over 50 wineries welcome visitors with impressive vistas & Texas hospitality - served up with some barbeque!

Outside of wine country, there are hidden gems from coast to coast.  Indulge in farm to table cuisine, get active outdoors and relax in the fresh air.  Some of our favorite fall getaways include:

Blackberry Farm - Walland, TN - As a luxury farm retreat in the Great Smoky Mountains, Blackberry Farm stands out as the ultimate destination for gourmands and oenophiles.  This rugged yet refined destination offers wellness, adventure and enrichment activities with a variety of sumptuous accommodations.

The American Club - Kohler, WI - This rustic five-star resort is just 2 hours from Chicago and is a golfer’s paradise.  Known for its award-winning spa, The American Club offers a host of year-round outdoor activities and a variety of restaurants featuring local cuisine, from pub fare to fine dining.

Salamander Resort & Spa - Middleburg, VA - Nestled within the heart of Virginia's picturesque horse country, this upscale property is just  minutes from the nation's capital.  In addition to being close to wineries and vineyards, Salamander offers culinary activities and equestrian events throughout the year.

Triple Creek Ranch - Darby, MT - This luxury mountain retreat features an all-inclusive ranch experience with horseback riding, hiking, rafting and more.  Private log cabins, gourmet cuisine and impeccable service make this property every nature lover's dream.

As we approach the change of season, be sure to take advantage of all that autumn has to offer.  With colorful leaves, crackling fires and hearty meals, fall truly is a feast for all senses.
